Otolaryngology Surgical Simulation Lab

FSA is responsible for the 1,600-square-foot, multidisciplinary Surgical Simulation laboratory renovation in the McMillan Hospital building on the Washington University School of Medicine campus. This facility provides a state-of-the-art simulation platform for training and education in surgery of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, and central nervous system.

The lab features the latest equipment and audiovisual resources to enhance the surgical training of medical students, residents, fellows, and trained practitioners in the interrelated fields. Fourteen independent workstations are ventilated and drained to control environmental impacts. Surgical microscopes, endoscopes, drills, and suction/irrigation are used with a variety of instruments to interfere with cadaveric and/or fabricated models to allow students the opportunity to learn and practice relevant anatomy and procedures in a risk-free environment. High-definition cameras provide still image and video recordings for both real-time and archival review. A touchscreen router offers audiovisual integration of the various stations, maximizing participants' exposure to varied experience and conditions.
